Artist Statement:

“Grand Illuminations” is a public art project that reimagines how we experience photography in urban environments. The piece features multiple double-sided, internally illuminated lightboxes on multiple downtown lamp posts, in order to create visual stories. Each side of a lightbox displays a distinct photo by Bryan Esler, separated by a central light panel for optimal clarity and glow.

Artist Bio

As a Grand Rapids-based photographer with a focus on events, portraits and community life, my work is about honest storytelling and dynamic composition. In addition to my work at Downtown Grand Rapids Inc., I’ve partnered with organizations such as Experience Grand Rapids, Gerald R. Ford International Airport, Confluence, ArtPrize, Grand Action 2.0 and others to document life across West Michigan. Past experience includes a large-scale photographic mural installation of “Michigan Meditation,” at Gerald R. Ford International Airport. This project is a natural extension of my mission: To make photography more public, immersive and emotionally resonant
