Sounds of Spring under Sheets of Snow

Display Year:

2023

This installation was an audio and visual piece titled “Sounds of Spring under Sheets of Snow.” It consisted of four cube structures, constructed together, which represented snow drifts or sheets of ice. The cube structures concealed lights and speakers that produced nature sounds. The sound played on a continuous loop throughout the event. Sounds were nature-related, including frogs croaking, crickets chirping, and birds singing. Over time, snow accumulated on top of the structures, providing unique lighting effects. The inspiration for this piece came from the many animals and insects that hid under the snow during the cold months, and the hope was to bring some of those nature sounds to life during the winter season

Artist Statement:

Growing up in a secluded wooded environment, I learned early on in my life that all creatures play an important role. It is no surprise that these early encounters would be reflected in my artwork through large scale depictions of animals, insects, and landscapes. I continued to expand on this idea by representing the relationships that are shared between humanity and the environment. I often use light, sound, and texture to create a multi-sensory experience. It is my goal to connect with the viewer through their senses so that they are no longer viewing the art, they are experiencing the art.
