The Hive

Display Year:

2025

Repetition and uniformity are rare in nature, but one of the most remarkable examples is the honeycomb. The Hive mesmerized onlookers as the hexagonal forms shifted in color, movement, and sound. Built as a homage to the often underappreciated yet vitally important bee, The Hive highlighted the significance of bees and the challenges they face worldwide. Bee populations were in decline due to climate change, pesticide use, and the deadly Varroa mite, which was spreading through Australia, impacting food crops and ecological biodiversity.

Artist Statement:

Originally commissioned for Vivid Sydney 2023, The Hive consisted of a towering array of custom high-density LED fixtures suspended in a honeycomb structure from a purpose-built steel frame, programmed volumetrically using 3D software. The repeating hexagonal structure ebbed and flowed with color and movement, synced with an original 10-minute musical composition by Perth electronic musician Mike Midnight.
